Leather Event Review: Folsom Street Fair
Sorry, this is harsh but...
When you start seeing Jewish grandmas at an event you used to go to watch mostly naked men clad in Leather walk around beating and torturing each other senseless while others watched and sometimes suck around or even fuck around... Well, it's a buzz kill. OK? Get it?
This year was a swarm of obviously straight tourists and less and less interesting venders and the most commercial in-your-face grab for the Gay buck and/or vote I have ever seen.
What, pray tell, do Chronicle newspaper subscriptions have to do with Leather?
What do votes in whatever election with no significant political stance or concern have to do with Leather men or women?
What do tour buses full of Japanese tourist have to do with Gay men and women and Leather sex?
What! In Gods Green Earth do several straight couples pushing baby strollers among a sea of naked men and women have to do with GAY Leather sex?
(Am I off here or have the choices of straight parents suddenly taken an incredible dive for the fucking GUTTER?! That was the most slimy, most idiotic, abusive action I have ever seen!)
That's it! I'm going to Dore Alley next year and not the stupid, Disney-fied, clueless, mess called Folsom Street Fair. It's amazing to say after seeing just about anything and everything happen on the streets of San Francisco, but straight people treating me and others in Leather like some circus side show are yucking me out.

I agree with you about Folsom, though I still wouldn't miss it for the world. I'm a leatherdyke whose been in the Scene for 27 years, and I've been to many, many years of Folsom St. Fair. There seems to be more and more 'tourists' i.e those going who don't dress in ANY fetish item at all...just shorts and cotton..and then take youtube videos of us they post up on youtube, laughing at us all along like it's some big joke that doesn't apply to them. Anyone under 18 should NOT be allowed into Folsom. Neither should these running video cameras taking videos without anyone's permission.
We play right out there, not just in the women's tent, which when we went to it had no oldtimers playing, just newbies who hadn't a clue to any level of dungeon protocol. There seem to be fewer and fewer leatherdykes attending and more and more hets. I've also seen less wildness among the gaymen as well, and though there's still some good creative leather craftspeople booths, there's also ALOT of drivel, too many organizations, and too many commercial porn or sex video interests. I'm looking for leather craftsmanship, the items you can't find anywhere else, but at Folsom or in a greater quantity of colors and styles than you'll ever find at an expensive leathershop. I've always gotten great deals on my equipment, especially floggers, at Folsom.
Sadly, because of the commercial interests I think they're getting priced out.
Dore Alley is probably better for you as a leatherman, but for myself and my boi, I didn't like the naked wankers wanking off on their own....I love Scenes, no matter whose doing them, gay male, lesbian...but the naked wankers, no thanks.
